York Roman Festival Guide

This year, 2011, the 1,800th anniversary of the death in our city of Emperor Septimius Severus, York Roman Festival will take place on the weekend of 18-19 June. Films begin and end the festival at City Screen. All of the daytime events at The Black Swan Inn are completely free of charge. Download this guide and map as a PDF file (4Mb).

There will also be various fringe events around the city including an open top Roman bus tour, the new "Gladiators of York" exhibition at York Dungeon and many bars and restaurants offering Roman themed food. Map showing fringe events.

Friday 17 June - launch + ghost walk and play

11.30 Festival launch with an inspection of the troops (local school children) outside the Mansion House, St Helen’s Square by the Lord Mayor of York
18.45 Roman ghost walk. Starts from The Golden Fleece at the bottom of Shambles.

20.30 Performance of a play based on the famous Roman soldier ghosts as seen by Harry Martindale.

Black Swan Inn

The Black Swan Inn on Peasholme Green will be transformed into a gladiatorial arena for displays on both days. On Friday and Saturday evening there will be a play, an author talk and the auction (ticketed).

As the finale of York Roman Festival on the evening of Sunday 19 June at 8.30, City Screen will be showing Monty Python's hilarious parody of life under Roman rule during Biblical times, THE LIFE OF BRIAN (15).
